DJ David James (Treble D)
David
James, who originally played under the name of Treble D back in the
early days, has been DJ’ing for almost twenty years. His first gigs
coming at the tender age of fifteen when he appeared at the Essex
blues parties spinning Hip Hop, Soul and Reggae. Then in 1987 he
moved to East Anglia and played through the early warehouse scene
becoming an established resident at many of the main events in the
area including Eclipse, Dance Paradise, Intense, etc.
David has been producing music for the last 10 years as part of
‘Supakings & Alaska Soul’ with Mark Yardley (now of Stanton
Warriors). But it wasn’t until he released the monster hit ‘(Always)
A Permanent State’ on Hooj Choons back in 2000 that Dave officially
arrived in clubland.
Things really took off for David and helped further his career when
he became one half of DJ and production duo ‘Audio Drive’. This
continued to promote Dave’s reputation, taking him around the world.
David’s status continued on the up with his excellent sets for Drama
at the Cross, and then at Canvas where he became a resident for
eighteen months.
Dave even has his own club night called ‘Dirty Skankin’ Sounds’ held
at Kinky Mambo (formerly the Retreat) in Islington where he rocks
the 200 crowd every month. Again his reputation spread, taking him
to Hype at AKA, alongside other gigs like Cuckoo Couture at the
Shadow Lounge and the Whitehouse in Clapham.
David’s recent gigs have included a spot at Dave Beer’s infamous
Back 2 Basics in Leeds where he appeared for DJ Mag alongside Kelvin
‘Soul Mechanic’ Andrews. As for the continent he has just returned
from playing at the fantastic Oven Ready night, held at Vega in
Copenhagen spinning alongside Denmark’s very own Tim Andresen. David
has also played at Ibiza’s legendary Space, making an appearance for
DJ Mag on the outdoor arena. As well as Ibiza, Dave has also played
at other venues around the world including visits to Australia and
Dubai.
On the production front things are really moving with David having
two projects being released in the coming months. These are the
pumping electro house grooves of Audio Drive featuring lyrics from
one time Leftfield vocalist Earl 16 and ‘Saints (David James)’
Something’s Wrong, which is a studio venture with techno man Andrew
Arinello. Watch out for these coming your way soon.
