DJ Dean Tyrell
Dean
began his DJ career in 1990 when shortly after he was booked to play
at most of Cambridge’s house parties including regular appearances
in the progressive room at Eclipse. He is now resident at Garito
Café in Palma, Mallorca and writer for electricsoul. He released a
number of US house influenced tracks all to good critical acclaim in
the early nineties, and more recently for Twilight Records in 2002.
Dean Tyrell has always been a massive music fan since he was a kid.
His mother always had music on in their house from Mowtown, Diana
Ross, Marvin Gaye, The Stylistics, Harold Melvin as well as Burt
Bacharach and Elvis. With his sister being into the disco thing it
was inevitable that something was going to rub off. Back then Dean
was listening to rock bands such as The Clash, Santana, Pink Floyd
and The Who which inspired him to learn to play the guitar. By the
age of eighteen Dean has joined a band and had performed at the 100
club, playing on the same stage that Jimi Hendrix, The Stones and
the Pistols had performed on. Dean’s group had some good times being
managed by Oasis’ very own Alan McGee.
In the late Eighties Dean started going to parties and jams put on
by Harvey Bassett and Choci, that later became the Tonka sound
system. It was through this that Dean started to buy the records,
and with his musical experience started to DJ, which he found easy
due to the fact he had written songs in the past and understood the
musical structure. It didn’t take Dean long to establish himself and
develop a style.
Dean has spent a lot of time working in Spain where he has enjoyed
three summers playing in various bars and clubs. With the advantage
of playing for four hours, seven nights a week Dean got the chance
to really experiment with things. Playing his own selection of house
and disco, instead of the usual pop that was being heard at the
time.
More recently Dean likes to play a bit of everything, especially old
skool as well as a classic garage style sometimes blending the two
together. He can also be heard playing a broad variety of choons
from deep house to classic disco tracks as well as off the wall
things including the Clash’s ‘Magnificent Dance’ being one of Dean’s
favourites.
As for new material Dean released a track called ‘Legacy’ on
Twilight Records last summer as well as other projects he has been
involved with. Although there are no plans to release anything at
the moment. These days Dean is just enjoying life in Mallorca,
playing at Garito as a monthly resident and getting on with his day
job. How the other half live!!!
