DJ Julian Butterfield
Jools
Butterfield started DJ’ing in and around the Cambridge area in 1988.
His first break came at the infamous ‘Peril’ parties, while he was
running a local record shop called ‘Jay’s’. His eclectic style has
rarely changed much from those early days, although now he can be
heard playing across the board.
When Jools moved to London he started working at the ‘Blue Note’
club at Hoxton in Hackney. After enduring the long hours Jools got
fed up and decided he needed to take a break from it all. On his
return he joined up with ‘Nuphonic’ records as project manager. As
well as this, he also helped out with the A & R and did most of the
club promotions and DJ bookings. This led to his involvement with
the ‘London Xpress LP’ project and production of a radio show called
‘Audio Xpress’ which featured various guests, and was syndicated to
different stations globally.
In the summer of 2002 Jools teamed up with Groove Armada’s Tom
Findlay and Andy Cato, and together they formed ‘Ragbull
Recordings’. Releasing a blend of Soul and Disco peppered funky
grooves for the dancefloor. With an ethos being to release this
style of music Ragbull has already obtained music from Dan Tyler (Idjut
Boys), Winston Chimes, Sweet Left Peg and Igloo, as well as Groove
Armada.
Jools has appeared at many of the UK’s big festivals including
Homelands and Glastonbury. Touring has also played a part in his
career with recent visits to Holland and Norway.
Jools also now runs Ragbull’s sister event company called ‘Lovebox’,
which is also the name of their recently released fourth LP. Lovebox
have held many well-attended gigs, including the Thames boat
parties, which are always a sell out. His weekly ‘Express’ night is
infamous as being the only club night in London that Tom and Andy of
Groove Armada appear at!!! |
