DJ Muttley
Kings
Lynn jock Martin Taylor is better known as DJ Muttley, with the
nickname originating from his initials. He soon established a
reputation as one of the top DJ’s in the East Anglian region, doing
the rounds playing at most of the big events.
Mutt spent the early eighties riding around on a Vespa and jumping
about on the dance floor to The Jam, 2 Tone, Tamla, etc before
moving onto soul and early hip-hop. He soon found himself going to
those types of events enjoying gigs such as the legendary Caister
Soul Weekenders amongst others.
Then during the summer of love in 1989 Mutt decided to take a
holiday to the white island of Ibiza where it all got rather messy,
leading to him falling in love with the evolving acid house culture,
which was still very much in its underground form back home. On his
return Mutt was keen to carry on where he had left off. Not just
happy with listening to the latest choons he decided to buy a set of
decks and learnt to mix.
Mutt’s first residency came not long after when he was booked to
play at a night called ‘London Dance’ alongside Bizzy B at a club on
the pier at Cromer in Norfolk. “Basically a cellar with a strobe,
dry ice, a coupla decks and a raucous sound system – heaven on
earth” he recalls.
As the scene began to progress Muttley’s DJ career really took off
and soon he was booked up, playing at many of the big events in the
area such as Eclipse, Hyperbolic, Pulse and Intense. Mutt still
rates Eclipse as the best experience he has had behind the decks
saying “The times spent at Eclipse whether as a punter or DJ will
never fade, at least till the senility kicks in!!! The sound system
was always excellent, the atmosphere incredible and the friends I
shared those times with are still the same I have today. The nights
spent with my head in the bassbin to eventually mannin the wheels,
can it get any better? You look back at the best times of your life
and I have to say that those ravin days account for many of
them….Respect to Dave and Stu for making it all possible.”
As for today Muttley has retired disgracefully from DJ’ing
professionally although he is still very much into dance music
enjoying nu school breaks and drum ‘n’ bass as well as rediscovering
a love for funk and soul. Future plans? “Wanting to ride a clean
seven foot wave and get barrelled without killin myself in the
process!!!” says Mutt.
