DJ Robert B

Eclipse resident DJ Robert Back hails from Kings Lynn in Norfolk, home to the famous ‘Pulse’ nights held at the Saddlebow Speedway Stadium there during the early nineties. Rob was always into music from a young age listening to hip-hop and breakdance styles while being influenced by the likes of Grandmaster Melle, Erik B and Rakim, Public Enemy and Run DMC.

Rob started DJ’ing when he was seventeen while kicking around with local DJ legend and mate Muttley. After accompanying him to parties in their area and watching him play, Rob soon realised that this was something he really wanted to do.

Robert’s first big break came shortly after when he booked to play at ‘Into The Groove’ at the Junction in Cambridge. Rob had acquired a knack to really rock the crowd with his ability and style leaving clubbers gagging for more. This led to more bookings and soon Rob began to establish a good name for himself.

As well as the Junction do’s at Cambridge Rob also DJ’ed at quite a few of the early illegal raves including Kite High and Bees Knees around East Anglia. This led to him becoming a resident jock for Eclipse after he sent a tape to Stuart Banks through local ticket agent Andy Fish, who couldn’t ignore Rob’s wonderful talent behind the decks. Today Robert regards Eclipse as one of the best events he has ever played at. As for the memories Rob recalls the buzz of being named on the same flyers as his heroes such as Fabio and Grooverider, Carl Cox and LTJ Bukem, as well as having to deal with the fire alarm going off in mid set, a DJ’s worst nightmare. Then there were the happy euphoric times with DJ Muttley dropping Zero B’s Lock Up – the place just went mental!!!

In 1999 Rob packed up DJ’ing on a full time basis. With family commitments and his love of playing football for local side Kings Lynn, the late nights and lack of time were taking their toll. Although he still comes out of retirement now and again when the lure of the old skool events beckon, so watch out for him spinning back the years in true Eclipse style, you never know where he may pop up!!!
